Speak Out!

Recently while driving home, I heard an advertisement on the radio that began, “If you’re sick, you don’t want a nurse; you want a doctor…”

My heart pounded as I waited to discover the company that would produce such a misguided ad. It was an engineering firm. Their point was that if you had a foundation problem, you needed an engineer.

I dialed the phone number as the announcer repeated it. The office was closed, but I was able to leave a voice message. I explained who I was and that, as a nurse, I was concerned about their radio ad. I explained that our state is experiencing a nursing shortage and we in the nursing profession were trying to encourage people to choose nursing as a career. I asked them to delete the negative comment about nurses from their radio advertisement. I concluded by thanking them for their consideration and left my contact information.

Today, I heard the new ad, which began “If you’re sick you want a doctor…” When you hear or see something that is potentially damaging to nursing, take the time to speak out. We can make a difference!
