Fall 2004/Spring 2005

Nurse in the Spotlight

"I became a Registered Nurse in January 2001, after working nineteen and one half years in the oil field. The desire to work in medicine had always been with me, so when the opportunity to take an early retirement
from Altura arose, I took advantage of the situation. My interest in science and working with people found a perfect match in nursing.
I attended SP College and upon graduation found employment at Covenant Medical Center. The next three years were spent on E5/Neurology as a staff nurse. This allowed me to gain experience in taking care of
multiple patients while learning from some very caring and knowledgeable nurses. In January, 2004, I transferred to SICU where I am currently working as a critical care nurse. I really enjoy working in ICU because of the challenges of the unit and the friendships I have made."

Dr. Barbara Cordell made a presentation at the 2004 Annual N-OADN Convention (National Organization of Associate Degree Nursing) in Albuquerque, NM on November 12-14, 2004. Her presentation was entitled Funding Collaborative Ventures for Retention: ADN & BSN Programs Working Together. Panola College is part of a consortium in East Texas exploring creative ways to address the nursing shortage.

The group has received several grants to date to target at risk students in the nursing program and increase retention. Dr. Cordell will be sharing the results of the consortium’s grant activities and data results with nursing educators from across the nation.

This message brings holiday greetings to all as the fall 2004 semester comes to a close. Our counselor showed me a poem by Diane Ackerman on a Christmas card she received that I would like to share with you - "…I swear I will not dishonor my soul with hatred, but offer myself humbly as a guardian of nature, as a healer of misery, as a messenger of wonder, as an architect of peace…" I hope that each of you and your students and families enjoy the wonder of Christmas and that you get the rest that you deserve.
